“Mom, you don’t really believe the earth is flat, do you?”

“Mom, you don’t really believe the earth is flat, do you?”

I chuckled to myself when my son came home from school and asked me this.

A couple days before, my husband and I were invited to the home of my son’s best friend and classmate. It was one of the first social events with other parents and leaders of the school. During dinner, I asked people there if they really believed the earth was round and then I challenged their view.

And not because I believe the earth is flat, but because we (you and me) don’t know for sure because we’ve never seen it with our own eyes. Yes, we’ve seen pictures, but we’ve never been in space and seen it ourselves, so our belief is based solely off what someone else has told us to believe and I like to challenge that.

But not challenge it in attempts to be right (I genuinely don’t care to be right) but challenge it to get someone to think or see differently.

Because I truly believe our lives can change for the better in an instant with just a different perspective.

And so, yes, I would probably ask you if you believe we landed on the moon or if you believe the earth is round, but not because I want to be right, simply because I want you to see something different.

Because if it doesn’t challenge you it doesn’t change you.

This is Rhetoric.
