The unexpected are the best moments…

The unexpected are the best moments…

Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve listen to countless stories from my son’s senior class about their favorite memories from high school and all of them were unexpected.

The broken down bus and the impromptu bowling competition.

The unexpected joy found in a defeat.

The unexpected friendships found in the unlikely people.

I was reflecting on this the other day, when I felt myself getting frustrated over something not going according to my plan (it was so minor, I don’t even remember it now).

But as I contemplated it, I realized that like my son’s senior class, some of my favorite memories were not the perfectly curated moments, but rather the unexpected ones that were filled with joy and laughter.

We had plans to go to a concert that night, but a nasty thunderstorm rolled in and canceled the show. So we spent the night around a table at the restaurant (had terrible service) but spent the evening laughing until we were crying.

We spend a lot of our time trying to control things so we don’t experience disappointment, but in our attempts to control all the things we actually shield ourselves from the unexpected.

Enjoy the unexpected.
